It's Official: Yankee fans really are dumber than Red Sox fans

It's a close call, what with the Red Sox fans who think it's more fun to catch a ball than to have your home team get an important out...but 18-year old Scott Harper of Westchester, NY has now provided the definitive proof that Yankees fans really are dumber than Red Sox fans. Yesterday, Harper jumped from the upper decks in Yankee Stadium onto the netting behind home plate. According to this NY1 News story,

"Witnesses say Harper just jumped over the railing during the bottom of the eighth inning after being overheard saying "you think the net will hold me"? "

Uh yeah.

Comments:
Also, apparently, this was not the first time this had been done there.

From the New York Times -

"It was the second time in five years a fan dropped from the upper deck at Yankee Stadium. In May 2000, 24-year-old Stephen Laurenzi of Yonkers, N.Y., was unconscious for a short time while sprawled on the net as a game between Boston and New York went on. He also was arrested and taken to a hospital for observation.

''I was hoping I wouldn't see that again,'' Yankees manager Joe Torre said. ''You could break your neck.''

''I've never seen anything like that before,'' White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen said. ''I think that's New York, you know, anything can happen.''"

I love the way the White Sox manager thinks this says something positive about New York City: Hey, anything can happen there!

Yes, I did like the difference in attitude perceived, probably totally incorrectly, from their quotes. The world-weary, seen-it-all Torre against the hick-from-the-sticks pointing at everything and going "Well, gawlee-gosh!" (Yes, I know Chicago isn't really the sticks, but hopefully you get the idea...)
